Introducing Education in Democracy: A Journal of the NNER

Call for Manuscripts

The National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER) is pleased to announce a new journal: Education in a Democracy: A Journal of the NNER.  The journal will be published once each fall in an on-line format and will be accessible from the NNER website (nnerpartnerships.org).  It will be a peer-reviewed publication and all articles will be refereed using a double-blind review process.

The purpose of the journal is to foster inquiry related to the mission of the NNER (see nnerpartnerships.org for more information).  Articles should inform the NNER network about issues, policies, and practices that relate to the advancement of the Agenda for Education in a Democracy.  The publication of the journal should also increase engagement and participation across the four parts of the network (higher education faculty, faculty in arts and science, faculty and staff in P-12 settings, and community members interested in education).

Members of the NNER and others are encouraged to submit manuscripts to the journal.  All papers will be submitted electronically, and all correspondence will be via e-mail.  Additional information on the criteria for articles and the process to be used to submit an article for possible publication is provided in the section “How to Submit a Manuscript”.

Submitted articles will be judged on several criteria.  Most important, an article should contain appropriate content for the stated purposes of the journal.  Additional characteristics of an article should be its readability and applicability to issues being faced by the myriad settings of the NNER.

The first edition of the journal will be available in fall 2009, and those interested in having an article reviewed should submit the manuscript by March 1, 2009.

The Journal Editorial Board:  John Anderson (co-editor), Jean Eagle, Laura Nicosia, Thomas Poetter (co-editor), John Skillings (co-editor), James Tomlin, and  Caren Town.

How to Submit a Manuscript

Guidelines for Authors
The journal Education in a Democracy: A Journal of the National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER) accepts articles related to the Agenda for Education in a Democracy.  This means that articles should address one or more of the following issues: fostering effective participation in a social and political democracy, ensuring access to the understandings and skills required for satisfying and responsible lives, developing and providing continuing support to educators who nurture the learning and wellbeing of every student, encouraging educators to be competent and committed stewards of their schools and communities, and informing readers about educational policy issues related to the agenda of the NNER.  Collaboration across educational settings and boundaries is strongly encouraged, as are creative forms of scholarship from the Arts and Sciences, Colleges of Education, and P-12 school settings.  Submissions should be accessible to a broad range of readers interested in education.

Guidelines for Manuscripts
Manuscripts should meet the style requirements of the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association.   Articles should normally contain 5000 or fewer words, include an abstract of no more than 100 words, and provide a few keys words or phrases. Manuscripts will be refereed using a double-blind review process.  The editors reserve the right to make minor editorial modifications that do not alter the substance of the article.

What to Submit
The journal is presented in an on-line format; therefore, all manuscripts must be submitted by e-mail.  Manuscripts need to be sent as e-mail attachments in Microsoft Word or rich text format (RTF).   Due to the double-blind review process, all information that could identify the author or institution should not appear in the manuscript, but should be included on a separate cover page document.

Submissions should be sent to John Skillings at skillijh@muohio.edu.  A separate cover page document should also be attached that includes the title of the article, the author's name, e-mail address, mailing address, affiliation, and one-sentence biographical background.

Copyright Policy
Each issue of the journal is fully copyrighted by the NNER.  As a condition of publication, authors grant the NNER permission to post or print the full text of an article for the use of its members.
