Re: A Summer Symposium on the Agenda for Education in a Democracy
From: Executive Board of the NNER and Ann Foster, NNER Executive Director
Date: February 15, 2008

We are pleased to announce an opportunity to study the Agenda for Education in a Democracy (AED) this summer in Seattle. We are developing a week-long summer symposium for those who have not had the opportunity to participate in year-long leadership programs but who are interested in learning more about the Agenda and how to apply its principles in their work. This symposium will provide an opportunity to meet with colleagues from across the Network, discuss issues pertinent to the health of our public schools, universities, and communities, and to study and interact with NNER and IEI leaders who are committed to advancing the AED.

The symposium will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2008, and will conclude at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2008. In addition, participants will engage in online activities one week prior to the session; this use of technology will allow interaction and introduction to the overall symposium agenda prior to gathering in Seattle. Please note that the online component is a required activity. The registration fee of $750 will cover books and other reading materials (sent in advance), most lunches, a reception and dinner on the symposium’s opening day, intensive study, and conversation time with NNER leaders and John Goodlad. Participants will be responsible for their own travel, lodging, and meals that aren’t provided during the program. A room block has been reserved at the Silver Cloud Inn (Lake Union) where the symposium will be held.

During the week we will study the AED mission, conditions we must attain for its implementation, and the strategies we find most promising for implementation. In addition to conversation and reflection on the readings there will be opportunities to study social democracy in the larger surround—public places beyond education institutions. There will also be time for informal interaction with colleagues and the NNER executive board members where participants can raise questions and proffer strategies from their experiences that advance this work. Registration is limited to thirty participants to build collegiality. We encourage settings to send teams as this supports the tripartite nature of our work and allows teams to plan and work together as well as meeting colleagues from throughout the NNER.

If you are interested in participating in this intensive professional development opportunity, please email Ann Foster (annf2@u.washington.edu) or Elen Ward (elenw@nnerpartnerships.org) immediately so that we are aware of your interest. We must receive full registration applications by April 15, 2008 and will notify you to confirm your participation (or to let you know that there is no available space) as soon as possible. If the number of applications exceeds our space capacity of thirty participants, we will accept applications to best accommodate broad tripartite participation from throughout the network. Payment must be made to the NNER by May 10, 2008, to reserve your space in the symposium.
