The Department of Counseling, Leadership and Educational Studies at Winthrop University is seeking an innovative, visionary leader for a department that serves approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 200 M.Ed. and M.A.T. graduate students. The eight programs housed in the department include the areas of counseling, educational leadership, family and consumer sciences, middle level, secondary/P-12 (MAT), and special education along with core areas of diversity, educational research, and educational technology.

The Richard W. Riley College of Education enjoys a strong reputation in the preparation and advancement of quality educators for South Carolina and across the country. As an NCATE-accredited institution and a member of the National Network for Educational Renewal, Winthrop University maintains close working relationships with area schools as well as a number of state and community agencies. The university enjoys close proximity to Charlotte, NC (approximately 20 minutes from downtown), high quality local schools, and an affordable cost of living.

Major Responsibilities:

Manage departmental activities and programs.
Support, evaluate, and recruit faculty and staff.
Provide effective academic leadership and developmental coaching to faculty and students in the department.
Coordinate the accreditation efforts of all programs areas.
Supervise fiscal and physical operations.
Direct student recruitment, retention, and advising programs for majors.
Oversee the continuing review of curricula in light of current accreditation requirements.
Teach in the area of expertise as appropriate.
Be a productive faculty member in all areas of expectations—teaching, scholarship, and service.
Serve as an advocate for the department and its programs at the college and university levels.
Foster cooperative efforts with other departments and programs in the college and university.
Promote collaboration among faculty and with P-12 partners.

Qualifications:

Doctorate in a field closely related to one of the department’s programs.
Evidence of successful teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the rank of associate or full professor.
Evidence of strong leadership skills and experience consistent with the expectations of a department chair.
Knowledge of and experience with the accreditation process (e.g., NCATE, CACREP).
A minimum of three years successful work experience in P-12 public schools.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at the departmental, college, university, and public school levels.
Proven success working in a team-oriented environment.

Employment Conditions:

Position is 10.5 month, full-time, tenure track. Salary is commensurate with rank of associate professor or full professor.
