Salt Lake City 2003
Thursday, October 9, 2003

Membership:

  1. The partnership involving the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools was unanimously accepted as a member of the NNER.
  2. The partnership involving the University of Texas Arlington and Arlington Independent School District was unanimously accepted as a member of the NNER.
  3. Dick Clark reported that Brandon (Manitoba) Schools and Brandon University were showing active interest in membership as were Akron (Ohio) University and Akron Schools. Several others have expressed interest and there will be follow-up information in the future.

Report of Nominating Committee regarding Governing Council Chair

The committee reported nomination of Greg Bernhardt and Carol Wilson for chair of Governing Council.

Ratification of 2003-2004 Budget

The Council approved the budget for 2003-2004, and approved expenditures for 2002-2003.

Preliminary Selection of up to 6 Persons to Balance Membership

The Council decided to have the arts and science group and the school group select an additional member in order to increase balance of constituent groups on the Governing Council.

Saturday, October 11, 2003

Nick Michelli welcomed newly elected members to the Council including Vi Florez representing the University of New Mexico.

  1. Elect new Governing Council Chair
  2. Carol Wilson was elected as chair of the Governing Council. Greg Bernhardt and Ada Beth Cutler were elected as at-large members of the Executive Committee.

    The new Executive Committee consists of:

    • Carol Wilson, chair
    • John Anderson, arts and science tri-chair
    • Vernon Henshaw, schools tri-chair
    • Deborah Shanley, SCDE tri-chair
    • Ada Beth Cutler, at-large
    • Greg Bernhardt, at-large
    • Nick Michelli, past-chair
    • Ann Foster, executive director

    The new committee will meet for the first time on December 13-14, 2003, in Seattle.

  3. Receive and act on report from Tripartite Committee as a result of its work on October 9-10, 2003
  4. The attached report of the Tripartite Council meetings on October 9 and 10, 2003, was received. Settings will discuss this report and the Governing Council will act on policies at its meeting in February 2004.

  5. Receive preliminary report from Equity Committee
  6. The attached report of the Equity Study committee meeting on October 9, 2003, was received. Settings will discuss this report and submit their comments to the Equity Study committee which will prepare a revised draft by the time of the Executive Committee meeting on December 13-14, 2003. The committee will revise the report one more time as appropriate following that discussion, and submit it for approval by the Governing Council at its meeting in February 2004.

  7. Receive and act on report from Research Committee
  8. Nick Michelli reported on the first session of this committee and indicated that the members of the network would be receiving follow-up information regarding the recommendations from the group.

  9. Complete actions balancing membership as needed
  10. In addition to the elections by the constituent groups, several settings changed who will represent them on the council. A revised list of members of the council is attached.

  11. Report on Salt Lake Conference and Preview of St. Louis Conference

The Governing Council expressed strong appreciation to the many people from BYU who did an outstanding job of hosting the 2003 conference. Richard Young reported that 288 registrations were received. There was strong interest in obtaining the video and publications from the opening session and Young indicated that he would notify settings of how this could be accomplished within the next few weeks.

Mary Ellen Finch shared preliminary plans for St. Louis indicating that the theme will be "Strengthening the Agenda for Democracy in Uncertain Times" and she encouraged all to attend on October 21-23, 2004.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m. on October 11, 2003.
