John I. Goodlad has written the first chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa Foundation publication, Public Education, Democracy, and the Common Good, edited by Donovan R. Walling.

In the chapter, Our Schools as an Apprenticeship in Democracy, Dr. Goodlad challenges educators to respond to the current environment of school reform with a new commitment to "prepare the young for satisfying, responsible citizenship in a democracy."
